The Europa Race, a crewed regatta specific to the Imoca monohulls and competed in several legs, will not be held in 2012. However in the past few months the organizer Olay Nautic has put all of its efforts to try and maintain this race.
After having accepted Imoca's specifications, Olay Nautic found itself in a deadlock as the French government put forward the bill making it an offense to deny the Armenian genocide by Turkey in 1915.
A few weeks later, the French Constitutional Council refuses to ratify the bill and things seem to look promising again for the Europa Race. However, all the right conditions are not yet gathered to insure the quality of the race.
Not enough competitors: eight skippers instead of the ten expected by the organizer and the partners. Furthermore, the route and the configuration of the race (two crewed legs and one in solo) are changed.
Despite everyone's efforts, the partners of the race haven't yet confirmed their financial commitments.
A month and a half away from the start of the Europa Race (the 5th of May in Istanbul), too many uncertainties remain for Olay Nautic in order to organize the race in the best conditions for everyone, partners and competitors.
The Izmir Cup, the Figaro Bénéteau circuit race which is also organized by Olay Nautic is not going through the same difficulties.
The last leg of the French Championship of Offshore Sailing Solo 2012 will take place in September and should grant a great finish for the Figarists in Turkish waters.

Ven 10 Juin : Europa Race to be rescheduled
Olay Nautic, organiser of the race around Europe, and IMOCA, the association of skippers of 60' monohulls, have taken the joint decision to postpone the race, which had been scheduled to start on the 1st of July. The race itself fulfils all of the conditions set by the Organiser and IMOCA, but the number of entries is insufficient for an event of this standing. This situation is in part due to the difficult economic climate which has led to fewer sponsored campaigns, technical issues on some boats, and the fact that a number of boats have only recently finished the round the world Barcelona World Race.
